Dear Maryland/Delaware Baptists,

I pray that the year is starting off fruitfully for you and your congregations.

In a time with too much politicized religion, I am selective about engaging you with political matters. However, when policy collides with clear biblical truth, regardless of the politics, I want to encourage you to at least be aware of certain policy or legislative recommendations and also to consider acting as regards emailing, telephoning, or writing a letter to your appropriate congressional representative. The particular matter I am concerned about is the Equality Act, H.R. 5. Our own Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention has published an issue report on this legislation, but I really want to
encourage you to consider promptly contacting your two U.S. senators concerning this legislation, as this was a campaign point for President Biden regarding his first 100 days in office. Your senators’ contact information is listed below.

Here, among Maryland/Delaware Baptists, some of our congregations have Christian schools, and this legislation would certainly have impact for them. Many of us have raised daughters who enjoy and participate in athletics and this would have implications for them, whether at the elementary school, middle school, high school, or collegiate level. Many of us have businesses which engage in creative arts, such as florists and bakers, and this would have implications for those businesses. Basically, across the board, the strong push to reject the two clear biblical categories of gender, male and female, would have consequences for our consideration. This particular legislation would undo parts of the Civil Rights Act, the Fair Housing Act, and the Religious Restoration Act.

Please do two things:

Pray for lawmakers, that God (in common grace) would lead them to legislate in ways that would not assault the image of God in humanity and lead them to uphold generally-accepted biological scientific research.
Please contact your U.S. senators with a personal note, email, or phone call.

Grace to you,
Brother Kevin
