George Liele Missionary Celebration
February 2 - February 9
Did you know that George Liele (also spelled Lisle or Leile, 1750–1820) was an African American and emancipated slave who became the first black Baptist in Georgia and the founding pastor of the first black Baptist churches in America: First Bryan Baptist Church and First African Baptist Church, in Savannah, Georgia? He also became the first American missionary, leaving in 1782 for Jamaica, making him the first Baptist missionary in Jamaica. In honor of his faithful service to God, The National African American Fellowship (NAAF) of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) has established a Missions Scholarship to benefit missionaries from African American SBC Churches who, too, have been called to “GO” into Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria and the end of the earth. You will have an opportunity to contribute towards this scholarship next Sunday, February 9th. Please give generously.
